14 correct answers – Band Score 4.5

Reading

20 correct answers – Band Score 5.5

Note: The candidate lost 5 points only because incorrect completion of the answer sheet, i. e. T was written instead of True, F – instead of False and NG – instead of Not Given. If not for these mistakes, there would have been 25 correct answers with the Band Score 6.0

Writing

Band 5.5

Task 1

This response addresses the requirements of the task. Key features and an overview are presented, although clearer highlighting, more support and a more comprehensive overview would be needed to reach a higher band. Information is well-organised and there is a clear overall progression in the response. There is some effective use of cohesive devices but only limited use of reference and substitution. The range of vocabulary is not wide, but it is adequate for the task. Control of word form and spelling is consistently good, although there are some clumsy noun phrases that indicate limited flexibility. The candidate attempts to use a mix of simple and complex sentences, but control is variable and grammatical errors are quite intrusive at times. Figures are well integrated into sentences, but sometimes indicate evident limitations. The number of words in the text is well over the word limit, so it must have taken the valuable time which should have been used on the Task 2.

Task 2

The answer is underlength at 218 words, so the candidate loses marks for this. This answer addresses both questions, but the second is not well covered in terms of assessing the changes in the way relationships changed. Nevertheless, there is a clear opinion that the effects have been both positive and negative and relationships have improved, with some relevant ideas to support this. There is a general progression to the argument, with some effective use of time markers and linkers. There is also some repetition, however. Paragraphing is not logical, and ideas are not always well linked. The first paragraph seems to combine description of the effects of technology on relationships as well as assessing them, while the second and third argue on the topics vaguely connected to the task. A range of vocabulary that is relevant to the topic is used, including some precise and natural expressions. There are quite a lot of mistakes, but these do not usually reduce understanding. A variety of sentence types is used, but not always accurately. Errors in grammar and punctuation are distracting at times, but only rarely cause problems for the reader. The essay lacks a conclusion.

This is a generally good response to the task, but the weaknesses in organization limits its rating.

Speaking

Band 6.0

This candidate can keep going, but he uses only a limited range of connectives. However, he does respond directly to the examiner’s questions. There is some hesitation and although some markers are used effectively, there is occasional loss of coherence. He mainly demonstrates quite simple vocabulary in this part of the test, but uses this effectively to talk about a range of topics. He uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate non-personal information, but he is sometimes not able to paraphrase Russian words, which indicates his limitations. Overall, he tends to keep to simple structures with a high level of accuracy. However, there are hardly any examples of complexity in the interview and many sentences are incomplete. His pronunciation is clear throughout with only minor mispronunciation of phonemes. However, his responses are often short and there is insufficient evidence of a wide range of phonological features used to convey meaning.

In spite of this candidate’s confidence, he does not demonstrate the features of performance that are necessary to reach Band 7.
